The account of Patrick Joseph Kilmartin’s part in Ireland’s fight for freedom has in the main been compiled from the records kept by his brother -in-law Patrick Joseph Stephenson.

Paddy Joe or Paddy S. as he was known to his family and friends was a fellow member of the Volunteers and participant in The Rising.

Material has also been gleaned from the records of his nephew Patrick Heuston Stephenson who recorded PJK’s recollections,

All of the above have been supplemented by his family . Information and material was available and obtained by Dave Kilmartin from military records viewed at Cathal Brugha barracks, The National Archives in Dublin, The Department of Defence Records Galway, and the various historical publications on the period including Fr J. Heuston’s book The Easter 1916 Rebellion.
